Writers in the Schools

Storytelling reveals our truest selves. Since 1983, Writers in the Schools (WITS) has worked hand-in-hand with educators and professional writers to teach students the craft of writing. WITS is transforming the hearts and minds of young people all over Houston.

Thief

Floods are thieves that made my favorite cow, Cursey, die. During the flood,
I was with my mom. My mom was making dinner for everybody. When the
news came on, I saw that Port Lavaca was flooding. When the flood was
over, I went to see if Cursey was okay, but instead of her being alive, she
was dead.

So I ran inside upset, and my grandpa came and said, “What’s wrong?”
I said, “I lost Cursey.”
We went outside to see her. When we were outside, I found Cursey’s gold
bell on the floor.
